Our girls love meal worms. If you’re a chicken parent, you already know they’re a favorite but they’re not cheap. Initially, we stored the worms on the side porch. It’s quite an inconvenient trip if I forgot them because our four girls are unforgiving about it. I needed easy-reach treats for the chicks.
The zip close bags they come in are handy, but easily tear or spill. No one wants to scoop up a hundred tiny meal worms from the ground. In addition to a stable storage container, I wanted it to be suspended from the ground. We desperately need rain water diverted from our coop (it’s on the to do list), so it can get a little slick in the yard after a hard rain. Between the mud and four nephews under the age of 8, there’s no way I’m setting pricey meal worms on the ground.
I decided to reuse juice bottles that would hang on the fencing. Bottle, hook and cable tie. 3 items offer an helpful, simple solution. I also appreciate the transparent bottles because anyone can see the contents.
I can fill the bottle and hook it anywhere around the run. I now have several bottles for meal worms, pumpkin seeds, minows, crickets, oyster shells, and scratch hanging down at the run. Treats are always within an arms reach when anyone is visiting with our girls.
